Bar Carolina

1/

Described by one of Melbourne’s chief restaurant critics as ‘a place you eat with your eyes’, the appeal of South Yarra’s Bar Carolina is grounded in highly detailed interiors. The designer’s exacting specifications included custom-made folded steelwork that wraps the brass-plated bar. Timber wall panelling was also custom treated, alongside leadlight glazing and patinaed brass accents. Terrazzo tiling abuts parquetry flooring in tallowood. Extensive engineering reinforced the building’s structure.

Hagen's Butcher

1/

Hagen’s is a second-generation family business and one of Victoria’s original organic butcheries. The design of their fourth outlet in South Melbourne communicates their dedication to craft and celebration of rituals of the trade. Customer interaction is encouraged by an open, zoned floorplan, as opposed to a traditional over-the-counter experience. The space is lined with custom pink terrazzo, utilised as much for aesthetic compliment to the product as its heritage and durability. Curved steel and glass display cabinetry was built-in with galvanised steel detailing, and custom steel furniture was created for the butchery class area.

Iki Jime

1/

Iki-Jime occupies the site previously held by Bistro Vue. The design utilised the existing interior framework to introduce a new hand-made expression. Reflecting the venue’s ethos, quality and restraint are key elements in the dark, moody restaurant. Charred reclaimed hardwood was fashioned into custom banquettes and booths. Other joinery was also hand-crafted. The darkened palette also required stained timber flooring and custom-built acid-treated zinc lighting. Steelwork included custom shelving and mild steel detailing throughout.

Laneway Greens

1/

Laneway Greens opened their 55-seat Exhibition Street venue as a flagship store, following their first in Flinders Lane and the second in Richmond. The almost fully timber fit-out reflects the wholefoods canteen’s dedication to sustainable and locally sourced produce. Hand-crafted banquettes and furniture were made from reclaimed hardwood and the ceiling is lined with eco-friendly Wood Wool Cement Board. The scheme also responds to the urban location. Clay brick tile flooring contrasts with Melbourne’s ubiquitous bluestone, while the steel glazing and illuminated façade is sympathetic to the CBD vernacular.

Gilson

1/8

Gilson is an all day bar and bistro on the Botanical Gardens precinct. Open from 6am everyday, it was designed by Projects of Imagination and was inspired by the traditional Parisian establishment and a time gone by.

Working closely with artisan joiners, steel and glazing fabricators and bespoke furniture makers, Duobuilt managed and executed the demolition to transformation of this existing popular cafe to a place whose intention is to build and brace the notion of institution, furnishing an immediate sense of tradition and feeling of ‘always was and always will be’ with a modern fresh vernacular.

Crafted items feature throughout, from the pink cement floor, zinc bar top and joinery, hard plastered wall treatment and original light fittings.
